Cotswold District Council has pledged to balancing the need for new homes with an "infrastructure first" approach.

The council said this will ensure environmental considerations and the needs of the community are at the forefront of any developments.

An engagement session was held in Moreton to allow residents and stakeholders to voice what they think should be priorities for the Cotswolds.

Several concerns were raised, including the need for improved infrastructure, sustainable development, and better community engagement.

Councillor Joe Harris, leader of the council, said: "We understand the complexities and concerns surrounding housing development.

"However, it’s crucial that we proactively address the growing need for more homes while safeguarding the Cotswolds’ unique character."

With around 1,650 people currently on the council's housing waiting list, the aim is to ensure everyone in the Cotswold District has access to affordable, low-carbon homes.

A Moreton Working Group will be established to oversee strategic growth in key development areas.

The group will comprise representatives from community businesses and organisations.

Councillor Harris said: "Planning for Real and Cotswold District Council would like to thank all those who attended the event providing their time and sharing their knowledge of living and working in the Cotswold District.

"By prioritising infrastructure and taking a strategic approach to planning we aim to create a brighter future for the Cotswolds, one that balances housing and economic growth with environmental protection and community well-being."

The council aims to undertake a further public consultation on the draft Local Plan in early 2025 to give the community an opportunity to get involved in the next stage.

Moreton Against Over Development, a campaign group, has expressed concerns about the council's pledge.

Its statement said: "The public pledge from Joe Harris and Cotswold District Council for ‘infrastructure first development’ is welcomed, however Cllr Harris and Cotswold District Council need to explain how this will be funded - otherwise these are hollow words.

"The scale of new infrastructure that CDC suggests for Moreton will require many, many thousands of new homes.

"CDC can only compel developers to deliver what is promised with watertight and completely enforceable planning conditions.

"Sadly, CDC has a history of failing Moreton in this regard."
