Cotswold District Council has received over £38,000 to tackle fly-tipping.

The council attained this funding from the 'Fly-tipping Intervention Grant Scheme'.

The funds, totalling £38,341, will be allocated through to October.

Fly-tipping, which is illegally dumping waste, causes environmental damage to the district.

Legal waste removal processes include kerbside collection or using an authorised waste carrier.

Registered waste carriers can be discovered on the Environment Agency’s website and ask for waste transfer notes, which serve as a receipt for the waste removal.

The Fly-tipping Intervention Grant Scheme’s purpose is to provide support to local authorities in England.

The goal is to intervene by raising awareness of the household waste duty of care, as householders are obliged to ensure their waste is correctly disposed of.

This entails requesting waste carriers' licences and waste transfer notes when hiring a waste remover.

To raise awareness about householders' duty of care, the funding has been used to promote the S.C.R.A.P fly-tipping campaign:

• S - Suspect ALL waste carriers • C - Check with the Environment Agency that the provider taking your waste away is licensed • R - Refuse unexpected offers to have waste taken away • A - Ask what will happen to your waste • P - Paperwork should be obtained – get a full receipt

The fund has facilitated the promotion of S.C.R.A.P across the district, and co-operation with town and parish councils to get the message out in their areas.

The council has installed cameras in fly-tipping hotspots across the district and acquired up-to-date technology to help catch offenders.

In the imminent months, all householders will be contacted to remind them about their duty of care and waste disposal legislation.

Cllr Juliet Layton, cabinet member for planning and regulatory services, said: "I’m pleased the Council has been awarded this funding from the Government, thanks to the brilliant bid that was put in by our officers.

“We are hopeful that this campaign will spread awareness around duty of care and in turn reduce the number of fly-tips in our district due to rogue waste carriers. "
