MOST residents have given the thumbs-up to a major transport hub in a Cotswold town.

The two events held over the weekend in Moreton on August 2 and 3 gave hundreds of curious and concerned residents a first look at new plans to improve transport links at the train station.

The plans include the demolition of the former Royal British Legion building next to the train station to make space for more long-term parking, a pedestrian area, a walkway into town and much more.

Malcolm Berry, chairman of Moreton Town Council, said: "It was really good and it was very very popular and there was an awful lot of people.

"Obviously it is going to take some time to look at all the feedback but it gave everyone lots of opportunity to have their say of which the vast majority was positive.

"There were a few residents who popped down who didn't want any change in Moreton but it was largely positive and there was well over 30 people in the room at any one time."

The transport hub is a project between Great Western Railway (GWR) and the town council that would see improvements to Moreton Train Station with benefits to the wider town.

The plans for a new "multi-use transport hub" will provide 56 new long-term parking spaces, bike stands, a taxi rank, a new drop-off area, a bus area, and a walkway into Moreton.

Eileen Viviani, vice chair of Moreton Town Council, said: "People really liked the design and we had some really good suggestions about the position of things such as the EV charging points where people thought they would be better off in a different position.

"The feedback was useful and the community was comfortable with the design, especially with the new walkway into town which I think everyone agreed would be much safer.

"I'm not saying all the feedback was positive but people gave us their suggestions and we are now going to look through the results before we move onto the next stage."

GWR regional development for east, Eleanor Wills, said: "The proposed transport hub would provide a significant improvement to existing facilities for our customers and the local community, and we were really pleased by the success of the latest community engagement event.

"We had around 200 people drop in over the two days and would like to thank everyone who came to visit.

"We’ll now be using the feedback to help push the project forward."
