Three Oxfordshire towns up for the UK’s most depressing places to live have avoided the top 20 list - unlike a neighbour across the border.

A national review website, iLiveHere.com, notorious for its scathing reviews, has unveiled its top 20 list after asking readers to nominate the most depressing places across Britain.

Didcot, Chipping Norton and Henley were all listed among the locations that could be voted on by readers for this year’s list.

However, none of them made the final list but it was the neighbouring town Swindon that ranked 13th.

This comes as last year, the review website described Swindon as the eighth-worst place to live in England.

Abingdon and Henley were also both included on the shortlist for 2023.

The site has changed the emphasis for this year’s contest and wanted to find the 'most depressing town' rather than just the 'worst place to live'.

iLiveHere declared "bland, boring, soul-destroying mediocrity with a gaping cultural void" as the focus.

Swindon ranked as more depressing than Chatham, Basingstoke, Wells, Blackpool, Teignmouth, Torquay, and Widnes.

Each entry came with a description of why it had been included in the list.

Swindon’s explanation was extremely brief, saying: “Pig town has made it on to our beige list too. Well done my luvvers!”

Ranking as more depressing places were Croydon, Luton, Crawley, Paignton, Portsmouth, Ellesmere Port, Yeovil, Tiverton, Alloa, Aberdeen, Peterborough, and – top of the list – Falmouth.
