A rare 18th century wine glass was sold for just under £10,000 at an auction in Moreton in Marsh.

Kinghams Auctioneers wrapped up 2023 with record prices at its December Fine & Decorative Arts auction.

One of the standout items was an unassuming wine glass from the Queen Anne period, circa 1710.

The glass, described as "rare" by a Kinghams specialist, piqued the interest of collectors and connoisseurs of wine-related and glass antiques.

Measuring just 18 centimetres high, with a heavy baluster and a conical bowl with a single air drop to the lower stem, the Queen Anne relic was initially estimated at a modest £500-800.

However, it fetched an unexpected £9,750 on the auction floor, steered upwards by strength in the market.

The wine glass had been consigned by a client who was simply having a clear-out of their unwanted possessions.

It turned out to be one of the highest single prices of the auction.
