A MAN has been jailed for smashing a beer glass into another man's face outside of a pub.

Thomas Nuttall, of Bourton,  has been jailed for three years after after he was found guilty of wounding Lee Kelly with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm at Cirencester Courthouse last month

Nutall, of Rye Close, had claimed he was acting in self-defence of himself and his father, who was with him at the Kingsbridge Inn on October 21 2022, when the incident happened.

The jury, was told that Mr Kelly was treated by paramedics at the scene and was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital where his injuries were treated.

He received stitches to cuts on his face, sustaining a three inch cut to the forehead and two other cuts below the left eye and on the left cheekbone.

During Nuttall's sentencing, the judge, Recorder Patrick Mason, said: “On the night of October 21 last year you were socialising with your father and were not looking for any trouble at all.

“It is clear to me on the CCTV that Mr Kelly wanted to engage with you in a way that was unpleasant and provocative.

“You pushed him away at one stage, possibly in anger or in frustration. It is clear that Mr Kelly threw the first punch and whatever he said to you was unnecessary, but your actions that followed could not have any justification at all.

“You picked up the glass, discarded its contents and used it as a weapon. This was beyond the time frame of acting in self-defence, but you were reacting to a great deal of provocation.

"The jury found you guilty of trying to cause Mr Kelly really serious harm.  He suffered a wound which was not as serious as it could have been.

"Mr Kelly has little or no memory of what happened. I accept that you have shown remorse and it’s not a case of you just feeling sorry for yourself.

"There are a number of positive aspects in your life. You’ve grown in maturity since this incident."
