One of David Beckham's favourite delis has closed due to lack of footfall with the owner urging residents to do more to support local shops.

The quaint and charming Mrs Bumbles in Burford has now closed and is being redecorated.

There are rumours of a pop-up drinks shop moving in shortly.

Former footballer Mr Beckham spent a staggering £400 on fruit and vegetables during one trip with daughter Harper to the fine food emporium.

Steve and Sally Colter of Mrs Bumbles said they are "trying something new".

Disappointed Mrs Colter said: "It is just one of those things. The premises did not meet the requirements of the business."

However, she said lack of footfall had been a factor and urged local people to do more to support the local shops.

"We scrabbled to make ends meet," she said. "Yes you can make money in Burford the summer but you have still got to get through the winter months."

In Spring 2014 Mrs Colter, an experienced chef, oversaw a refurbishment that gave the shop, which has been a mainstay in Burford for 30 years, an extended deli-counter and kitchen.

She sold meats, cheeses, homemade pies and savouries, plus a wide range of Italian products, award winning coffees and teas, homemade jams, pickles and chutneys and sausage rolls.

She and her team were keen for customers to taste the produce and were available to help and advise.

"I did my best, there wasn't much more I could do," she said.

There was also a growing overlap with other businesses increasingly selling similar items to Mrs Bumbles such as good ice-cream and coffee, she said.

The Colters stepped forward to keep Burford's post office service in the town after Burford News announced it was closing.

The couple will continue to run the post office and have started a taxi firm called Burford Private Hire.

Mrs Colter said: "We get a salary from the post office so it wasn't my best business decision but it's increasing.

"I am bringing elements of Mrs Bumbles into the post office and we've also been able to benefit by offering tourist information.

"We're trying something new."

David Beckham and daughter Harper took the 30-minute journey from their country home in Great Tew to Burford many times to restock on the shop's fresh fruit and veg during the Covid lockdowns.

Mr Colter said: “David Beckham turned up and put us on the map.

“He’s a very nice guy, it’s been very pleasant that he’s been calling in.”
