CRIME in Chipping Campden is down overall but the number of homes burgled has doubled since the New Year.

PC Caroline Paxford told Campden Town Council members last week that comparing figures from the same period last year showed that although crime in the area was generally down, the number of houses burgled had risen from four to eight.

.She said police had been tackling concerns about speeding along Aston Road and Station Road, Campden, since the New Year and that a number of motorists had been recorded exceeding the 30mph limit.

However, she added: "It is to some extent pleasing that the speeding hasn't been too excessive. We have passed our results to our traffic management department. My understanding is they will install a proper scientific monitor for a week."

She said criminal damage incidents had dropped from 11 to four, three of which were related to a single domestic incident.

As a result, that would no longer a police community panel priority, she added.

Cllr Clive Constable, chairman of the council's traffic management committee, said there had been a reduction in the number of cars speeding in Aston Road and Station Road as a result of the introduction of the 40mph on the way into the town.

"Although it's not perfect we have made a move in the right direction," he said.
