100 Years Ago March 21, 1908 THE question of liability to repair the old and now disused road between Winchcombe and Cheltenham was discussed at Saturday's meeting of the Rural District Council; eventually the council decided to deny liability. We are not in the least concerned as to the repair or otherwise of this road, but we must express our regret that, as far as one can judge from the report presented by the surveyor, the authorities have, in years gone by, allowed portions of this public road to be enclosed. The surveyor says there is one house actually being entirely across the road. Presumably, the public relinquished none of their rights over the old road when the new road was made, but they appear to have lost them through the stupidness of the local authorities.
75 Years Ago March 25, 1933 AT the annual parish meeting at Chipping Campden, Major Hart read the following resolution which he proposed: "That as the capacity and conveniences of the Town Hall no longer meet the growing need of the population and the question being one of public interest, this meeting therefore requests the Town Trust to seriously consider means and ways for making such improvements to the Town Hall, both as to size and comfort, in order to afford better facilities for the social and public activities of the parish." He suggested a competent architect be engaged to prepare a plan of suggested improvements to meet the requirements of the day and of the future. It was unanimously decided to put the matter before the Town Trust.
30 Years Ago March 23, 1978 MANY visitors to Bourton-on-the-Water have difficulty in finding the centre of the village due to the new traffic system, it was argued at Bourton's annual parish meeting. The only signposted approach to Bourton is Station Road which has been developed by the county council to take traffic away from the centre of the village. According to the parish council the county have succeeded only too well. One speaker said that the drivers using Station Road went straight on up Rissington Road, then realised they had missed the village and had to turn round and come back again. The village centre ought to be better indicated. Mr J Weir added that another reason why drivers were turning back in Rissington Road was that the Cotswold district council's car park was full and they had to look elsewhere.
