100 Years Ago March 7, 1908 AFTER experiencing an almost abnormally fine and mild period during the greater portion of February at Chipping Norton, during which the buds were beginning to show signs of swelling and some of the earlier flowers came into blossom, the weather towards the close of the month underwent a sharp change. The alteration was so swift and sudden that the birds stopped their morning and evening tunes and sank into retirement again. From the temperature varying around 50 degrees out-of-door, the thermometer sank back to about 30 to 35 degrees and under the influence of a biting northerly wind, sharp snow showers fell on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, although it has become somewhat too late in the season for the snow to lie for any length of time.

75 Years Ago March 11, 1933 THE chairman Mr Charles Slatter told Campden Rural District Council that his attention and that of two or three other members of the Council had recently been directed to the premises known as the King's Arms (formerly used as the Old Technical School) on the opposite side of the street, as a more suitable place for their meetings than the Town Hall. The premises referred to were equipped with central heating, and he himself thought they were much more suitable for the Council's requirements. After further discussion it was resolved, on the proposition of Mr W Stokes, seconded by Mr F Jones, and carried by a majority vote, that the offer of the premises mentioned lie on the table.

30 Years Ago March 9, 1978 THE silver jubilee spirit is to continue indefinitely at Bourton with a carnival week each June. Bourton put on one of the best silver jubilee shows in the Cotswolds last year and the jubilee committee has now formed itself into a carnival committee to organise an annual carnival with fancy dress parade, lighting of river banks, fireworks, various entertainments for the elderly and children, a community church service and a dance to end the week. In order to raise funds for launching the carnival week a fete is to be held on the village green in May and all organisations are being asked to support it. "The committee enjoyed the jubilee so much and thought the parish enjoyed it too, that they decided to carry on," the clerk, Mr W G Davies, told the parish council.
