A PONY had to be humanely destroyed after being brutally attacked in a field in London Road, Shipston yesterday.
The animal, one of a number in a field, was found lying down in a distressed state after being assaulted.
A vet was called but nothing could be done to save the pony, which had to be destroyed.
Police are appealing for information about the attack.
Inspector Patrick Devereux, who is based at Stratford police station, said: "This incident is horrific beyond comprehension and I am very anxious to hear from anyone with information which will help us find those responsible.
"I urge anyone who was in London Road yesterday between 2pm and 4pm and may have seen any suspicious people or vehicles to contact us as soon as possible."
Anyone with information is asked to contact either Shipston or Stratford police station on 01926 415000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A reward is available through Crimestoppers for information that leads to the arrest, and charging, of one or more people.
None of the other ponies in the field was hurt.
