100 Years Ago February 29, 1908 THE Medical Officer of Health in his monthly report to Campden Rural District Council stated that he had received two notifications of scarlet fever, one at Mickleton and the other at Hidcote Bartrim. Both were in a peeling condition. He examined the children at the schools at Mickleton on Monday, February 8, when 88 out of 92 were present. That morning he had received notification of a case of dipheria at Campden. It was now two months since a case was notified in the town so that it was difficult to trace the source of infection. He was making a house-to-house inspection of cottage property at Campden. In his annual report he said as a whole the housing accommodation in the district was fairly good, but at Campden and Moreton there were a considerable number of old cottages.
75 Years Ago March 4, 1933 AT the Swan Assembly Rooms on Monday evening, 60 of Moreton's aged inhabitants assembled for a real treat. This happy function was the third of its kind, and was made possible by the generous efforts of the Four Shires Lodge of the RAOB. Their concert party gave several entertainments, the proceeds of which, with a dance, proved sufficient to provide the necessary funds. To all those who helped with these arrangements, it must surely have been gratifying to see the pleasure that they gave to the old folk present. An hour before the treat was due to commence, the entrance to the Swan Hotel was surrounded by an expanse of water. Cars were placed at the disposal of the organisers and the guests were transported without inconvenience.
30 years Ago March 2, 1978 THE longest-running dramatic society in the North Cotswolds, the Bourton Vale Players, is engaged in a membership drive and to attract new members is planning a more active social life for the society. At a general meeting, the chairman, Mr Pennant Greaves, said that in addition to the final production of the season, Waltz of the Torreadors, it was hoped to arrange a regular programme of social activities so that all members - and not only those involved in productions - could keep in touch. The society was always on the look-out for new members, both acting and non-acting, and it was hoped that these extended activities might attract some more members, any age, either sex, to enable the Bourton Vale Players to extend their scope.
