CHILDREN and staff at Stow Nursery School celebrated the nursery's first birthday this week.

The nursery, which currently has a full complement of 24 children aged 2 to 4, marked its founding on February 26, 2007, with a party and a cake.

Nursery manager Anne Page said: "It was a lovely day and the children were very excited."

The nursery, which is based in a purpose-built accommodation in the grounds of Stow Primary School in St Edward's Drive, Stow, has close ties with the primary, whose headteacher Rebecca Scutt is on the management committee.

"Last year all but one of our leavers went to the primary school. The reception class teacher often comes in to see us so it's a gentle introduction to reception," said Mrs Page, who is hoping to expand the nursery in the coming months.

The nursery was awarded a £10,000 lottery grant last year, which it was able to spend on equipment for the children.

Following an inspection last September, an Ofsted inspector commented on the "very safe welcoming environment" at the nursery and said the children's behaviour was "excellent".
