A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to convert a bungalow in Chipping Campden into two homes has been given the go-ahead by planners despite objections from local residents.

Members of Cotswold District Council planning committee approved the scheme for 19, Cherry Orchard Close, Campden at their recent meeting.

Chipping Campden town councillors had objected to the scheme, which they said set "an undesirable precedent" for the introduction of semi-detached into the close.

They also objected to a two-storey property being built among bungalows.

However, despite the town council's comments and 14 letters of objection from neighbours, some of whom said the development proposal was "out of character" with the area, councillors granted planning permission.

Planning officer Martin Perks said in his report to the committee that: "With regard to concerns expressed about the proposed development being out of character with the surrounding area it must be noted that there is a terrace of six dwellings immediately opposite."

He also said that Cherry Orchard Close does not consist solely of detached bungalows and the physical alterations to the existing bungalow were not substantial.

As well as being converted into two homes, a timber garage on the site will be demolished, a two-storey side extension built and dormer windows installed.
