Boris Johnson’s resignation was ‘the right thing’ says the MP for the Cotswolds.

Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown believes that the majority of his constituents will be pleased with the Prime Minister’s decision to step down.

Johnson’s announcement came after more than 50 MPs resigned.

Alongside representing the Cotswolds, Clifton-Brown serves as treasurer of the 1922 Committee, which represents Conservative backbenchers.

He said: “Ultimately because of the number of resignations, his position became untenable and I think the bulk of my constituents after many months of uncertainty over his future will think it is the right thing that he resigned.

“Although Boris Johnson is going to stay on as a caretaker Prime Minister, I am sure that the new Cabinet will act as a constraint on what he can do.”

A process will now begin to decide the next leader of the Conservative party.

Clifton-Brown has not yet decided who he will back.

“The 1922 Committee will next week set out a timetable to initiate the parliamentary part of the leadership contest which will aim to produce a shortlist of two candidates by the summer recess on the 21 July,” he added.

“Thereafter there will be a hustings process in most regions of the country so that the Conservative party membership can vote on the final candidate.

“Finally, I think there will be a large number of candidates who put their names forward for the Conservative leadership contest, I have not yet decided who I will support.”
