ANYONE interested in the history of fans will be in for a treat next week when a special exhibition of rare antique fans will go on show in the Cotswolds.
Moreton-in-Marsh auctioneers Kinghams are hosting the exhibition to coincide with their inaugural Fans & Finery auction on Thursday, October 21.
Prior to the auction taking place, there will be a two-day exhibit of approximately 50 fans from a private collection spanning the period of the 17th to 20th centuries.
This will include painted, printed and feather examples, some reflecting historical events, others relating to fashion and society. All are rare examples and illustrate the change in subject, size and materials used throughout the centuries.
Examples of the on-loan fan exhibit are:
• A printed and hand coloured fan dating from 1805 to mark the installation at Windsor of George Rex.
• a painted fan by Van Garden dating from circa 1900 showing Pierrots pulling a tooth from the mouth of the Man in the Moon.
• a late 19th-century ostrich feather fan with the rare addition of a working watch in the guard.
• a 19th-century mother of pearl fan showing the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in classical pose.
Kinghams fan consultant Mary Cooper will be present to take questions and to guide potential buyers of the fans in the auction. The exhibit and viewing of the fans for auction will take place from Tuesday, October19, until the auction day.
Furthermore, Kinghams hold free valuation days for all manner of fans, vintage textiles, jewellery, watches, antiques and collectables at their Moreton saleroom every Tuesday from 10am to 4pm in aid of Cotswold Friends.
