MALVERN U11s continued the Spring Lane rugby club’s junior level success by winning at the Dursley Festival.
They beat Longlevens in the final with a golden try to follow up the U9’s victory in Dursley two weeks previously.
After an early start, the squad arrived for coaching on five-man contested scrums and line-outs.
The Gloucestershire opponents had been playing with the rules since last season.
Malvern opened against Stroud and set the tone with a resolute defence and strong team-work.
The high winds did not favour their quick passing game and try-scoring opportunities went astray before they won 2-1.
Against the hosts Dursley, Malvern dominated but conceded two solo breakaway tries against the run of play.
Their high-tempo game paid off though with two quick tap penalties resulting in tries to make it 2-2.
In the final group game with Minchinhampton, Malvern’s forwards created holes and drew players in before spinning the ball wide for the backs in a 4-0 victory.
Dursley won their remaining two games, Malvern made the final due to scoring more tries.
They played well against a well-drilled Longlevens side and went over in the corner for an early try.
Despite struggling in the scrum, the defence shone and an even game ended 1-1.
The tournament was decided on the golden try, which Malvern claimed after scoring first in the final.
