THE refurbishment of Chipping Campden’s 800-year-old town hall has been hailed a success by one of the project leaders.
As previously reported in the Journal, £120,000 has been raised to refurbish the Grade II building in the High Street, thanks to generous donations from trusts, organisations and residents.
A new disabled toilet, new men’s toilet and enlarged kitchen have been installed along with an additional toilet in the former clerk’s office in the lower town hall.
The building, which has previously stood as a jail, school and even a fire station in years gone by, is now back open for business after three months.
Clive Constable, chairman of the town trust, which donated £40,000 to the project, said Campden building firm Pyments did a great job.
“It’s a superb piece of work,” he said.
“Everyone who has seen it has been full of praise. My thanks go to everybody who was involved.” It has been a difficult three months for the building team after they found extensive damp proofing needed to be carried out, along with a new felt roof and covering.
Mr Constable said he hoped the new and improved town hall would mean more people would use the facility.
“The money we’ve earned over the years has been ploughed back so hopefully the people will enjoy the town hall more.”
